SURGE: Surface Regularized Geometry Estimation from a Single Image

This paper introduces an approach to regularize 2.5D surface normal and depth predictions at each pixel given a single input image. The approach infers and reasons about the underlying 3D planar surfaces depicted in the image to snap predicted normals and depths to inferred planar surfaces, all while maintaining fine detail within objects. Our approach comprises two components: (i) a fourstream convolutional neural network (CNN) where depths, surface normals, and likelihoods of planar region and planar boundary are predicted at each pixel, followed by (ii) a dense conditional random field (DCRF) that integrates the four predictions such that the normals and depths are compatible with each other and regularized by the planar region and planar boundary information. The DCRF is formulated such that gradients can be passed to the surface normal and depth CNNs via backpropagation. In addition, we propose new planar wise metrics to evaluate geometry consistency within planar surfaces, which are more tightly related to dependent 3D editing applications. We show that our regularization yields a 30% relative improvement in planar consistency on the NYU v2 dataset.

Real-time Multi-Plane Segmentation Based on GPU Accelerated High-Resolution 3D Voxel Mapping for Legged Robot Locomotion

This paper proposes a real-time multi-plane segmentation method based on GPU-accelerated high-resolution 3D voxel mapping for legged robot locomotion. Existing online planar mapping approaches struggle to balance accuracy and computational efficiency: direct depth image segmentation from specific sensors suffers from poor temporal integration, height map-based methods cannot represent complex 3D structures like overhangs, and voxel-based plane segmentation remains unexplored for real-time applications. To address these limitations, we develop a novel framework that integrates vertex-based connected component labeling with random sample consensus based plane detection and convex hull, leveraging GPU parallel computing to rapidly extract planar regions from point clouds accumulated in high-resolution 3D voxel maps. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves fast and accurate 3D multi-plane segmentation at over 30 Hz update rate even at a resolution of 0.01 m, enabling the detected planes to be utilized in real time for locomotion tasks. Furthermore, we validate the effectiveness of our approach through experiments in both simulated environments and physical legged robot platforms, confirming robust locomotion performance when considering 3D planar structures.

Multi-Resolution Planar Region Extraction for Uneven Terrains

This paper studies the problem of extracting planar regions in uneven terrains from unordered point cloud measurements. Such a problem is critical in various robotic applications such as robotic perceptive locomotion. While existing approaches have shown promising results in effectively extracting planar regions from the environment, they often suffer from issues such as low computational efficiency or loss of resolution. To address these issues, we propose a multi-resolution planar region extraction strategy in this paper that balances the accuracy in boundaries and computational efficiency. Our method begins with a pointwise classification preprocessing module, which categorizes all sampled points according to their local geometric properties to facilitate multi-resolution segmentation. Subsequently, we arrange the categorized points using an octree, followed by an in-depth analysis of nodes to finish multi-resolution plane segmentation. The efficiency and robustness of the proposed approach are verified via synthetic and real-world experiments, demonstrating our method's ability to generalize effectively across various uneven terrains while maintaining real-time performance, achieving frame rates exceeding 35 FPS.


A Fast, Autonomous, Bipedal Walking Behavior over Rapid Regions

In trying to build humanoid robots that perform useful tasks in a world built for humans, we address the problem of autonomous locomotion. Humanoid robot planning and control algorithms for walking over rough terrain are becoming increasingly capable. At the same time, commercially available depth cameras have been getting more accurate and GPU computing has become a primary tool in AI research. In this paper, we present a newly constructed behavior control system for achieving fast, autonomous, bipedal walking, without pauses or deliberation. We achieve this using a recently published rapid planar regions perception algorithm, a height map based body path planner, an A* footstep planner, and a momentum-based walking controller. We put these elements together to form a behavior control system supported by modern software development practices and simulation tools.

Hulking 165-pound humanoid robot delicately 'walks a tightrope' of tiny blocks

Fascinating footage shows a robot using autonomous planning to precisely move along a treacherous path of narrow cinder blocks. Researchers trained the 165-pound'humanoid robot' to walk across narrow terrain by using human-like control, perception and planning algorithms. The video shows the robot, called Atlas, carefully moving across a balance beam using body control created using LIDAR. This system uses a pulsed laser to measure the distance between objects and this is procssed by the machine so it can step correctly on the narrow terrain. The researchers, from the Institute for Human & Machine Cognition (IHMC) in Florida, hope that the tech could be used for bomb squads or rescue missions.
